Just like with fashion, expensive-looking home decor doesn’t necessarily need to break the bank. You can mix high-end pieces with inexpensive ones. The key to a home that says wealth is cohesion — pick an aesthetic and stick with it. A guest should be able to experience the same vibe throughout your home. Your house should feel peaceful and thoughtfully put together. Clutter and chaos are a big no.
Want to ensure your house looks inviting, stylish, and exquisite? Here’s how to make your house look expensive.
My Home Aesthetic
My main decor style is clean aesthetically pleasing lines but also comfortable. I need a sofa and a table that are comfortable. I need something for guests and I love my dining room table because it extends to 14 people. I love having big dinner parties and I love my TV. My TV doubles as a picture frame which you can update to suit your aesthetic when you have people over.
Essential Furniture and Décor You Need
1. Sofa: Make sure you have a good sofa that’s deep and comfortable.
2. Wallpaper: Wallpaper makes a house look expensive. It gives it its finishing touch with beautiful patterns.
3. Light fixtures: Always make sure your lighting is good and think about the tone of the lighting. You don't want your lighting to be too iridescent, you want nice soft lighting and beautiful fixtures. They will help make your house look expensive.
4. Knobs and Handles: make sure these are uniform. All of the knobs on your doors and closet should be the same and should have the same finishes as your light fixtures. When these don’t match it makes your house look cheap.
Where to Find Your Home Décor Style
You should go to Pinterest and Instagram to find out what your style is before you start decorating. You can get a lot of good pieces on Wayfair, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, and CB2. They’re all moderately priced and if you're on a budget, Wayfair is great.
I got my table from Crate & Barrel. It’s a funny story, I saw the original at All Modern and it was a $25,000 table. I have children so I was not spending $25,000 on a table! As luck has it, I went to Crate & Barrel and found almost the same table for $5,000.
The salesperson at All Modern was the one who told me to go to Crate & Barrel. He said, “Go to Crate& Barrel, you're going to find the same one there.” He told me the name of the table and everything!
What Makes a House Look Cheap
Mixing and matching the wrong way. By that, I mean when things don't match, when there are too many colors, and when every room has a different style. Rooms should flow into each other. Mismatched furniture, or when your furniture looks like your cousin gave you everything that was left over from his dorm room will definitely cheapen your home. Too many knick-knacks look very cheap. Also, when people have those signs with the words on them — cheap.
Very important — mismatched dishware looks very cheap, so make sure everything goes together.
Décor Trends I’m Tired Of
French countryside. I'm over it, I don't like it. I think that it's boring and dated. It reminds me of a suburban housewife. It's very Home Goods and looks cheap — it's not aesthetically pleasing in any way to me.
Décor Style I love
I love Parisian luxury especially that French deco style. A luxury old French apartment speaks to me.
